A Day in Winter: Cleaning Up

This everyday tale started like any other.とりあえずは、そんな日常の話から。

The morning sun alerted Soujyuro that a day of work lay ahead.星の運びは、今日一日を労働に捧ささげるべしと告げていた。
Specifically, the gardens needed tending to,具体的に言うと庭の清掃。
and an unkempt garden made for an unhappy Soujyuro.草十郎にとって、これ以上アレを放置しておくのは精神衛生上よろしくない。
Luckily, today was his day off from all his part-time jobs.幸い、アルバイトの当番シフトは丸一日オフ。
It was the perfect opportunity to get his hands dirty.彼にとって今日はまたとない好機だった。

There was one problem, however: the mansion's grounds were vast.―――しかし。洋館の園にわは本気で広い。
Not only had the courtyard been left to run wild, but the area around the front door had been neglected, too.荒れ放題なのは中庭だけでなく、館の正面玄関まわりですら手入れが行き届いていなかった。
To tend to these problems thoroughly, he would have to work on them week in, week out.本気で掃除をするのなら、一週間単位で計画を組まなくてはいけない広さである。

"All right. First, let's level things out."「よし。まずは地ならしだな」
In an ideal world, his task would only take a day, but for its enormity.理想は一日で成し遂げられるものではない。
For the moment, Soujyuro decided to set foot into the mansion's wilderness and evict the weeds.今日は雑草の除去だけに専念しよう、と草十郎は決意を新たに荒れ野に踏み出した。

Wasting none of the early light, he started tackling the ones around the mansion.朝も早くから館の周りの雑草を引き抜いていく。
By his estimation, he could clear the forecourt, courtyard, and backyard, then take a small rest.計算によれば、午後までには玄関付近、中庭、裏庭をぐるりと一回りし、一休みできる予定になっていた。

"What's gotten into him?"「どうしたの、彼」
"Beats me. I doubt he's out there for fun."「さあ。草摘みが趣味ってワケじゃなさそうだけど」
It was just before noon in the sunroom.正午前のサンルーム。
Alice had come down, book in hand, to find Aoko sitting down with a fashion magazine and elegantly sipping tea.有珠が本を片手にやってきた時、先客である青子は優雅に紅茶を飲みつつ、ファッション誌を読んでいた。
Through the window she could see the crouched figure of Soujyuro shuffling by.窓ガラスの向こうには、しゃがみこんだまま後退していく人影がひとつ。

"He's been at it all morning.「朝からやってるみたいよ。
Hunched over since I saw him first thing from my bedroom window. I told him to clean the incinerator, too. Any objections?"起きてカーテンを開けたら、もうあの格好でスパスパやってたから。ついでに焼却炉の掃除も言いつけといたけど、いいでしょ？」
"Not really. He always works so hard. Even in the cold."「いいけど。……頑張るのね、彼。外はあんなにも寒いのに」

Alice quietly sat down.有珠は静かに腰を下ろした。
Her teacup had been placed on the table for her.テーブルには彼女の分のティーカップも用意されていた。
She poured herself some tea and proceeded to open her book.有珠はポットからカップに紅茶を注いで、持ちこんだ本を開く。

The two sat passing the time in silence.二人は無言で時間を過ごす。
Having happened to have the same idea: a nice, relaxing cup of tea in the sunroom.青子も有珠も気まぐれに、部屋で休むのだったらサンルームでお茶にしよう、とやって来ただけだった。
With their evening roles decided, there was no need for idle chatter.談話のネタもなく、夜にそなえての役割分担も既に済んでいる。

Aoko stared out the window, intermittently turning her gaze to her magazine.青子は雑誌をパラ読みしながら、基本的には窓の外の風景を眺め、
Alice was immersed in a book on rune magecraft, occasionally tilting her head up as if to recall something.有珠はルーン魔術に関する書物に没頭しながら、時折、思い出したように顔をあげる。

As if by unspoken agreement, in unison they pressed their teacups to their lips and glanced outside.ティーカップに口をつけ、二人は申し合わせたように窓の外に視線を送った。
To the two girls, Soujyuro appeared as if he were an animal in a zoo. Neither was interested in lending a hand.手伝う気など爪の先ほどもないのか、少女たちは他人事のように庭職人（駆け出し）の動きを観察する。
Despite his sluggish movement, he was making good progress.草十郎の動きは緩慢ではあるけれど、なぜか作業は迅速じんそくにこなされていった。

As Aoko's attention turned back to the sunroom, her eyes met Alice's.……ふと青子が視線を逸らすと、対面の相方と目が合った。
Alice returned her gaze to her book.有珠は取り繕つくろうように書物に視線を戻し、

|Clearing her throat, she attempted to focus on reading.|コホンと咳払いをして、読書に集中しようと目を伏せる。|

It was no surprise that Alice admired Soujyuro's diligence.……有珠が驚くのも無理はない。
Not even thirty minutes had passed before he had cleared the courtyard of its unsightly weeds.草十郎は三十分も経たないうちに中庭を横断して、あれほど見苦しかった雑草を綺麗に片付けてしまったのだ。
Without stopping once, the mysterious gardener left the courtyard, puffing clouds of white breath.謎の庭師は休憩も入れず、白い息を吐きながら、中庭から退場していった。
The area he left behind was spotless.立つ鳥跡を濁にごさず、どころの話ではない。

"Has he done this before?"「……プロかしらね、あいつ」
Alice muttered after scanning over his work.青子はその一部始終を見届けて、ぽつりと呟く。
A stalwart, Soujyuro worked confidently and ceaselessly.あまりにも迷いのない、鉄人の作業だった。
She was impressed, like she was watching a scene from a great movie, but before long she grew irked. Why would he waste his energy like that, she thought.良くできた映画を見た気分にすらなって、青子は感心……を通り越して、草十郎の無駄な芸達者ぶりに呆れている。
Alice looked at the clock.一方、有珠は顔をあげて時計を確認していた。

"If he starts now, it'll be evening before he's done with the incinerator."「……焼却炉、今から手入れをしたら夕方ね」
"Actually, he already took care of it. I watched him do it from upstairs.「そっちはもう終わってるわ。朝、上から見てたもの。
I didn't want him breaking it, so I gave him some pointers.壊されちゃいけないからあれこれ指示だしてね。
Y'know, I yelled at him for so long from my window my room almost froze over."いやあ、窓開けてさんざん怒鳴ったから部屋が冷えるコト冷えるコト」

It was safe to assume Aoko had come to the sunroom to escape her cold room.青子が居間にやって来た理由は、自分の部屋が冷えきってしまったから、と推測される。
Between barking orders from a window and cleaning in the cold, it was clear who had the harder job.……部屋から指図をするのと外で掃除をするのとでは、どちらが極寒ハードか言うまでもない。

"Did Sizuki have anything to say?"「静希君、何か言ってこなかった？」
"Yeah, a lot, but I couldn't really hear him."「言ってたけど、よく聞こえなかったわ」
In other words, his complaints fell on deaf ears.つまり、草十郎の文句は一切効きかなかったという事か。

With nothing else to discuss, the two resumed their reading.共通の話題もなくなって、二人は読書を再開する。
The ever-so tense silence was broken by Soujyuro, entering the house after finishing his cleaning.そんな、少しだけ張りつめた沈黙を破るように、掃除を終えた草十郎がやってきた。

He stared at the two of them, displeased.気に食わない事があったのか、草十郎は険しい目で青子たちを一瞥する。

"Warm enough in here, Aozaki?"「あったかそうだね、蒼崎」
"Warmer than outside. Unless you're walking the halls.「外よりは幾分ね。廊下の気温は外とあまり変わらないけど。
What made you decide to take care of the gardens, anyway?"それで、どうして庭の掃除なんてはじめたのよ、草十郎」
Soujyuro's subtle jibe had failed to find its target.草十郎の嫌味なんてこれっぽっちも効いていない。
He had no chance of winning, and so just hung his shoulders in defeat.青子てきの丈夫さに、草十郎は今更ながらガッカリと肩を落とした。

"It's so cold out today. Snow's probably going to fall tomorrow, so I thought I should tidy up while I could.「今日は本当に寒い。明日あたり雪でも降ってくるだろうから、外の掃除は早くに済ませたかったのに。
I didn't think I'd have to work on the incinerator, too..."……焼却炉は予定外だったぞ」
He sounded resentful, but his problem was not with the additional work. If anything, he was glad to do it.恨みがましく言うが、草十郎にとって焼却炉の掃除などお菓子のおまけみたいな物だった。
What he did not care for was how nobody had even bothered to lend a hand.彼が不満に思っているのは、誰も手伝いにこなかった、お寒い事実だけである。

"So what? We all need to use it.「いいじゃない、焼却炉はみんな使うんだから。
Hey, seeing as you're in a generous mood, vacuum the upstairs corridor, will you?じゃ、その殊勝な心がけついでに、二階の廊下に掃除機かけといてね。
Oh, and that brace for the beech tree out back is on its last legs. Put that toolbox in your room in the attic to good use."それと裏庭のブナの添え木、壊れかけてたでしょ。工具箱はアンタの屋根裏へやに置きっぱなしだから、それを使うこと」

"And once you're done with that, come to my room.「で、ぜんぶ終わったら私の部屋に来てくれる？
I have a bunch of things I'd like you to throw in the incinerator."いらない物まとめておくから、焼却炉で焼いておいて」

Hence why she made him clean the incinerator.そのために焼却炉の手入れをさせたらしい。
Cruel, but clever.憎らしいぐらいの段取りの良さである。

"And what're you going to do while I'm doing all that?"「それで蒼崎、君は何をするんだ？」
"Hmm. No plans, really. Maybe I'll play a little guitar."「そうね、やる事もないしギターにでも触ってようかしら」
Aoko thought hard about how to spend her afternoon.うーん、と有意義な午後の過ごし方を模索する青子。
Yet the thought of cleaning did not cross her mind, as had always been the case.嫌味に対して嫌味で返しているワケではない。
No, it was not out of spite that she did not think to help clean, it was because the word "cleaning" was not in her vocabulary.きっと、彼女の予定には『掃除』という単語が存在しないのだ。

Soujyuro knew exactly why the mansionこの洋館はなぜ荒れ果てているのか。
was in the state it was in.その理由を、はっきりと草十郎は思い知った。

Still, that did not change the fact the corridor upstairs was very long.……それにしても二階の廊下は長い。
And Aoko was not lying about how cold it was-inside was not much different than outside.おまけに青子の言う通り、廊下の気温は外とそう変わりはない極寒だ。

"You really have no intention of helping me, do you?"「……そうか、あくまで掃除をする気はないんだな蒼崎。
"I mean, I do enjoy cleaning, but...I don't know...まあ、掃除はしたいからするけど、こう、なんだろう。
Don't you even feel a little bit guilty using a roommate like this? Or do you just not feel guilt at all?"一緒に住んでる人間をそこまでこき使って良心は痛まないか？　それとも、わりと気付いてはいたけど、良心そのものがないのか？」

As usual, he might have gone too far.相変わらず、一言多い男である。
His remarks had hit too close to home. Aoko closed her magazine and turned to face him.草十郎の的確すぎる指摘に、青子はファッション誌を置いて向き直る。
Infuriated, she glared, her sharp, blue eyes piercing into him.透き通る青い目が、苛立ちをこめて草十郎を直視する。
Soujyuro knew he had not said anything unjust, but he always backed down first.その目力に、正義は１００パーセント自分側にありながら、つい気合い負けをする草十郎だった。

"Soujyuro.「草十郎。
Let me explain it. One. More. Time."何度も言うようだけど」
"No."「はい」
He replied automatically, straightening his back in response to Aoko's cold, calm tone.落ち着いた青子の声に、反射的に背中を伸ばす草十郎。

"Don't be mistaken. We're not letting you stay here out of kindness.「勘違いはしないで。私たちはアンタを同居させてあげてるんじゃない。
We're putting up with you, because we have to."これ以上ないって譲歩の末、仕方なく飼ってあげてるだけなんだからね」
Aoko did not mince her words.きっぱりと青子は言う。
Soujyuro nodded in defeat.草十郎はなるほど、と頷いた。

"So, I'm basically a pet."「そうか、飼ってもらってるのか」
"Exactly. And not a very useful one at that."「そ。番犬にもならないだろうけど」
Aoko responded, already tired of the conversation.草十郎の呟きに、青子はつまらなそうに言い返す。
While Soujyuro had little room to counter, he still tried.それはそれで事実なのだが、草十郎にも一つや二つ反論もあるというもの。

"Last time I checked, most pets don't have to buy food or pay rent."「しかし一方、番犬は間違っても自分の食い扶持ぶちを入れたり、あまつさえ家賃を払ったりしないのも事実であった」
"Did you say something?"「何か言った？」
"Nothing. I'm just a dumb mutt barking up the wrong tree."「いや。負け犬の遠吠えを、少しばかり」
He raised his hand dismissively, knowing he could not win.参りました、とばかりに手をあげる草十郎。
To Aoko's ears, his attempt at self-deprecation sounded facetious.自虐的なセリフは、彼が言うと間の抜けた冗談にしか聞こえない。

"You do understand the position you're in, right?"「……草十郎。アンタ、ほんとに分かってる？」
"Yeah. One where I do all the work."「そうだな。君たちがどうあっても掃除をする気がないぐらいは、なんとか」
Aoko grinned at her pet's obedience.それだけ理解していれば上等である。
As long as he knew his place, that was all that mattered to her.そんな草十郎の態度に、青子はにっこりと笑みをうかべた。
She seemed to be extremely satisfied with his response.どうも、今の返答がたいへんお気に召した模様。

"Heh. You don't have a care in the world, do you?"「ふーん。余裕あるんだ、静希くんってば」
Her playful smile darkened, as did Soujyuro's expression.楽しげな青子の笑みと同時に、草十郎の顔が曇くもる。
"Aozaki, I...I can't breathe."「……蒼崎。なんだか、息ができないんだけど」
"You know, if I keep this up you'll never be able to complain again. Shall we give it a try?"「このまま放っておくとそんなコトも言ってられなくなるんだけど、試してみる？」
He shook his head, his expression growing more and more grim.草十郎は顔をますます曇らせながら、いや、と首を横に振って答えた。

"Smart choice. I don't want to see you suffocate. If I can help it."「賢明ね。私も窒息死体なんて見たくないもの」
The grating sound subsided.耳障りな音が途絶える。
Soujyuro gingerly touched his throat.草十郎はそろりと首に手を当てる。
The collar that had suddenly tightened around his neck returned to its normal size.さっきまで独りでに絞まってきた首輪は、今ではもとのサイズに戻っていた。

"Do you have any idea how painful it is to suffocate? It's excruciating."「……気管が塞ふさがれた時の苦しさを知らないんだろ、蒼崎は。本当に抵抗できなくなるんだぞ、あれは」
"I told you that's what your collar was for.「だから、そのための首輪だって言ったでしょ。
You're always so naive, so I took the opportunity to give it a test run... Now you know your place.今まで実践したコトなかったし、アンタはあいかわらず危機感ないし。ここらで一度躾しつけておいたの。
Anyway. Chores. You're wasting daylight."―――それより掃除。急がないと日が暮れるんじゃないの？」

"Okay...「……はあ。わかったよ。
So that's what the sun was trying to tell me this morning..."結局、今日はこうなる星の運びだったんだ」
Soujyuro left the sunroom, his shoulders slumped and his tail between his legs.負け犬よろしく肩を落として、草十郎はサンルームから立ち去っていった。
Aoko watched him leave before turning to her magazine as if nothing had happened.それを見送った後、何事もなかったように青子は雑誌に視線を戻す。

Alice paid no attention. None of that had anything to do with her.以上のやりとりを、有珠は我関せずと聞き流していた。
With Soujyuro gone, the room once again fell silent.何度目かの沈黙。
As the clock ticked on, Alice suddenly stopped flipping through her book.刻々と時計の針が回る中、不意に、ページをめくる有珠の手が止まった。

"Any reason why you push him so hard?"「ねえ。どうして彼を酷使するの？」
She asked as though talking to herself.独り言のような問い。
Aoko replied without so much as looking up.青子は雑誌をめくる手を止めず、

"Nope. We're just going to erase his memories in the end anyway. Why get his hopes up?"「別に。最後には記憶を消させてもらうんだから、楽しかったら困るじゃない」
Obscure as ever, but sincere in her own way.極めて分かりにくい、彼女らしい誠実さを口にした。

"When you put it like that...I suppose you are right."「…………そう。言われてみれば、そうだったわね」
Alice could not believe she had forgotten about the situation.……そんなコトを、忘れていた自分に驚いてしまう。
Silently, she looked up from her book and gazed outside once again.有珠は静かに顔を上げ、硝子ごしの風景を眺めた。

The courtyard through the window reminded her of where she lived a decade ago.窓から見える彼女の中庭は、十年前の故郷を思わせる。
Nothing could compare to the beauty of those gardens.あの頃に比べれば何もかも見窄みすぼらしい、荒れ野とさえ言える庭。
But if that was the case, why did the scenery make her feel nostalgic?なのに、どうして面影が重なるのか。
All Soujyuro had done was take care of the gardens with the goodness of his own heart.ただ大切に、真心だけで手入れをされた彼女の庭。
In only half a day, he had achieved so much.それが今日半日の、草十郎の成果だった。

Scene 1

It was Christmas Eve, and snow had started to fall.イヴの日に、雪はしんしんと降りはじめた。

Its timing was too good, as though it had waited for that day specifically.自らの価値を知っていたのか、今年の初雪は誰もが喜ぶ記念日に顔を見せた。
The cold, bustling main street seemed bright and vibrant under the layer of frosty white.大通りでの賑にぎわいは白く寒く、それでいて明るいものになっているだろう。

Reindeer statues illuminated the surroundings...トナカイを象かたどるイルミネーション。
Children danced merrily to "Jingle Bells"...子供たちの足を弾ませるジングルベル。
People walked along the brick road, smiling broadly...レンガの道を行く人々は、一様に満ち足りた微笑みをうかべている。

However...しかし。
had not reached the mansion on the hill.そんな街の彩いろどりも、丘の上の洋館には届かない。
Silence enveloped the isolated building.人里から離れた館は静かに。
The shadow of the snow-covered woodland grew longer,森は白い粉雪に覆われ、いっそう影を濃くしていた。
beckoning in the darkness.いずれ来るであろう黄昏時たそがれどき。
People returned to the warmth of their homes, knowing a bitter night lay ahead.人々が家路いえじに就き、街頭から人気ひとけの絶える静夜を、じっと待ち続けるように。

Something had been amiss in the mansion all day.その日の洋館は、朝から空気が違っていた。
Perhaps it was the calm before the storm.嵐の前の静けさである。
Two days had passed since Touko Aozaki had revealed herself.敵の正体―――蒼崎橙子の存在が明らかになってから二日。
Aoko and Alice spent more and more time locked in their rooms; mealtimes had grown noticeably quieter.青子も有珠も自室に閉じこもる事が多くなり、食事時どきの談話も目に見えて少なくなった。
With their roles decided, they were too busy with their own jobs to worry about each other.役割分担を終えた少女たちは、それぞれの仕事を全まっとうするため、自分の事だけで手一杯なのだ。

On this day, the two had been relaxing in the drawing room since morning.そんな二人が、今日は朝から居間でくつろいでいる。
The mood was calm.張りつめた様子もない。
Well, mostly at least―Soujyuro was fretting that tonight would be the same.だから逆に今夜がそうなのだと、草十郎は悟ってしまった。

"The snow just couldn't wait till tomorrow, could it?"「雪が明日なら良かったのに」
He aimed his words towards the girls on the sofa,草十郎はソファーに座った二人に話しかける。
despite knowing they would be ignored.返事は期待していない。
Whether the snow fell today, tomorrow, or not at all, it did not affect them.大体、雪が明日になったところで彼女たちに変化があるわけでもない。
The snow just meant a white Christmas.クリスマスが、ホワイトクリスマスになるだけの話である。

Aoko remained silent.青子から言葉はなかった。
She wasn't ignoring him per se; she just had other things on her mind.無視しているのではなく、単純に、そこまでの余裕がないだけだ。
Soujyuro knew this, but still cast a lonely glance around the sunroom.分かり切った事とはいえ少し淋しいな、と草十郎はサンルームに視線を投げる。

The courtyard he had cleaned only a few days ago was hidden by a layer of white.何日か前に手入れをした中庭は、白一色に染まっている。
The falling snow would stop every so often, but then resume again as if teasing Soujyuro.粉雪は降ったり止んだりと気まぐれだが、この分ではかなりの厚さで地面に残るに違いない。
By the next morning, the courtyard would be a winter wonderland.夜には一面の銀世界になるだろう。
Aoko and Alice sipped tea in an effort to fight the cold.伝わる寒気から身を暖めるように、青子たちは紅茶を口に運んでいる。
In fact, that was all they were doing.思えばそれだけが、今の彼女たちの行動だった。

"You know, Touko's hair was darker than yours, Aozaki.「そういえば、橙子さんの髪の色は蒼崎より濃かったね。
I've never seen such beautiful red hair. Shame it was so short."あんな綺麗な赤毛は初めて見た。短くしてるのはもったいなかったな」
Soujyuro rambled on, not expecting a response.これも返事は期待せず、ぼんやりと呟く草十郎。
However...しかし。

"Her hair was cut short...?"「……短かったって、姉貴の髪が……？」
Aoko's expression went from nonchalant to its usual sharpness.心ここにあらずだった青子の表情が、普段の鋭さを取り戻した。

"What do you mean short? You are talking about her hair, right?"「それどういうこと？　短くしてるって、髪の毛の事よね？」
"Yeah. Even shorter than Alice's. Is that a big deal?"「ああ。有珠より短かったけど、それがどうしたんだ？」
"No. She just used to have longer hair than mine.「別に。あの人、前は私より長かったってだけ。
Hm... So she really cut it all off."―――そう。あの髪を切ったのね、姉貴は」
Aoko spoke in a grave tone.深刻な独白。
Showing slight interest, Alice turned to Soujyuro.有珠も関心があるのか、黒い瞳を草十郎に向けていた。

"What's so bad about her getting a haircut? Does it affect you in any way, Aozaki?"「……普通じゃないな。髪を切ったぐらいでどうしたんだ、一体。橙子さんの髪が短いと蒼崎が困るのか？」
"Well, yeah, it does.「…………まあ、その通りだけど。
As we have nothing to do until nightfall, I suppose I'll explain.いいわ、どうせ夜まで暇だし、説明ぐらいはしてあげる。
You're lucky. If you hadn't said anything, we'd have been oblivious when fighting her."アンタがそんなコト言わなければ、未知数のまま橙子と戦うはめになっただろうし」

Aoko knowingly glanced at Alice, her expression suggesting she was treating her.ま、ご褒美ね、と青子は有珠を一瞥した。
She was also likely seeking approval.おそらく有珠に同意を求めているのだろう。
Alice remained stoic as ever, her expression showing neither approval nor disapproval.有珠はやっぱり無表情で、青子の視線に肯定も否定もしない。

"How can I put this... Mages can use their hair as a weapon.「簡単に言うと、魔術師にとっては髪の毛も武器ってコトよ。
For the longest time, hair and eyes have been vital to magecraft. Especially in my sister's case.昔っから人間の髪や目は魔術の材料になりやすいの。女の場合は殊更ことさらにね。
The more colorful the eyes, the better. The longer the hair, the higher the quality.瞳の色は多彩おおいほどいいし、髪も長いほど質がいい。
Hair has the same qualities as the body, and when grown over many years it becomes a strong base component.髪の毛は自身と同一視しやすいし、長い年月をかけて育てられる、原始的で強力な“原料”と思ってくれていいわ。
That's why I'm growing mine out. Looking after it is a pain sometimes, but I like styling it."私が髪を伸ばしてるのはまあ、そういうこと。手入れが大変なんだけど、そこは女だから半分趣味みたいなもんよね」

Though Aoko and Alice had yet to find Touko, they knew everything would be concluded over the course of this day and the next.いまだ橙子の隠れ家を見つけてはいないものの、彼女たちには今日と明日が決着の日だと判っていた。

It was perhaps the first time it had hung since Soujyuro moved into the mansion.草十郎が洋館に住みだして、おそらく初めてになる電話の音は、深夜のホールに寒々しく響き渡った。

Hesitantly, he picked up the receiver and brought it to his ear.草十郎はためらいがちに受話器をとる。

While he was deep in thought, a voice as light as air came through the receiver.そんな事を真剣に悩んでいると、受話器ごしに、消えそうなほど細い声が届けられた。

Soujyuro could barely hear the voice, but it was definitely Alice's.かすれてはいるが、間違いなく久遠寺有珠の声だ。

The silence was as profound as the night,……深い闇のような沈黙。

After a long pause, Alice finally spoke.長い沈黙の後、ようやく有珠は声を出した。

Soujyuro wondered if she had had something to say, but could not respond in time.何が言いたかったんだろう、と草十郎はひとり考えこんだが、答えはついにでなかった。

Scene 4

They yearned to taste her warm flesh, and satiate their empty bellies.その飢えた腹を満たすために、目前のか弱い少女の、あまりにも食欲をそそる温かな腹の肉へ。
To them, the girl in black stood like a lighthouse in a stormy sea.彼らにとって、黒衣の少女は暗い海に立つ灯台きぼうにさえ見えている。

Alice had always been unflappable, and the child's play before her was hardly about to change that.それに動じるような心構えは初めからしていないし、この程度の脅しでは予想外どころか子供騙だましにもならない。
Her main enemy was not the dogs surrounding her, but the lone mage behind them: Touko Aozaki.有珠が見すえるべき敵は包囲する野犬ではなく、その後方の闇に控ひかえる魔術師―――蒼崎橙子に他ならないのだから。

With no time to grab his coat, he ran out into the snowy winter night with the clothes he had on.上着を取りにいく時間も惜しい。草十郎は着の身着のままで、まだ雪の残る冬の夜へと駆け出していく。

He did not seem to be dressed for the time of year.見れば、この寒さの中で歩き回る服装ではなかった。
Not even a coat. His exposed neck and hands were ice-cold.草十郎は上着も着ておらず、首もとや手の平が哀れなほど冷えきっている。

The slope would get steeper from here to the mansion.……考えてみれば、洋館までの坂は段々ときつくなっていく。
The thought of Soujyuro climbing this steep hill with her on his back surprised Alice.その坂を、自分を背負ったまま登っていく草十郎に、有珠は意外なものを見た気がした。

There was no point taking a break; he had already traveled close to six miles like this.休み休みとは言え、彼は実に十キロ近い距離をこうして踏破してきた。
Perhaps the fatigue was getting to him. Soujyuro was more upset with his own weakness than the difficulty of the trek.疲れきっているだろうに、草十郎はその困難さより、自分の頼りなさに呆れたらしい。

The innocence of his question made Alice briefly forget her pain.純粋な疑問に、有珠は一時、傷の痛みを忘れてしまった。

As Alice rested her head, something soft touched her cheek.有珠が顔をあずけると、こつん、と柔らかいものが頬に当たった。

With those words hanging in the air, they reached the top of the hill.その言葉を有珠が聞いた時、彼はもう坂を登りきっていた。
The gate in the woods stood before them. Beyond it, illuminated by the pale moonlight, stood the mansion.森の入り口にあたる正門。その奥には、月明かりの下に佇む彼女の洋館がある。
Looking up at it, the girl felt a little disappointed.それを見上げて、少女は少しだけ残念に思った。
A natural reaction, yet...……もちろん。
She could not place where her sadness was coming from.何を残念に思ったのかは、気が付く事はなかったけれど。

Scene 8

Once they entered the mansion, Alice slid off Soujyuro's back and walked toward the west wing.ロビーに着くと、有珠は草十郎の背中から降り、西館に向かって歩きだした。
The west wing was her domain.洋館の左翼、ロビーから西は彼女の管轄である。
However, after only a few steps, she collapsed to the floor.が。有珠は数歩もしないうち、床に崩れ落ちてしまった。

Soujyuro rushed over to her, but she raised her hand.草十郎が駆け寄ると、有珠は座りこんだまま片手を上げた。
Her gesture told him he was not to come closer.それ以上は近付かないで、と告げるように。
He stopped in his tracks, a concerned look on his face.草十郎は苦い顔付きで足を止める。
Her pale skin gleamed with sweat;……少女の白い肌には汗がにじんでいる。
her expression uncharacteristically strained.いつも無表情の顔は、苦しそうに痛みに耐えていた。

"...I'm fine. I can make it to my room on my own. Stay here. I'm going to mend my clothes.「……平気。部屋に戻るぐらいの力は戻ったわ。服を繕つくろってくるから、貴方はここにいて。

The pained look in Alice's eyes told Soujyuro they would talk later.きちんと話をする、と苦しげな目が伝えてくる。

Alice took a deep breath, before slowly disappearing down the corridor.有珠は深呼吸をしてから、確かな足取りで洋館の西館へ消えていった。
An uneventful five minutes passed.……時間にすれば五分もない空白。
Alice returned wearing a fresh set of black clothes,有珠は代えの黒衣に着替えて戻ってきた。
but her complexion remained pallid.顔色は一向に良くはならない。
With a small sigh, she carefully leaned against a pillar in the foyer, and slid down it until she was sitting.小さく息をついて、いつかのように、ロビーの柱に背中を預けて座りこむ。
