Perhaps due to all the put-off tasks that build up through the seasons, the month always seemed to pass by in the blink of an eye.やり残しを溜めに溜めた不始末ふしまつ故か、師走しわすの月日は瞬またたく間に過ぎ去っていく。

Though none of them were any the wiser to what the others were doing, Aoko, Alice, and Soujyuro had spent the day attending to their own affairs.何をやっているんだか互いに不明であるが、青子も有珠も草十郎も、忙しげな毎日を過ごしていた。

"What... is this?!"「なに、コレ」
Suppressing the urge to murder someone, her terrifying voice boomed across the room.殺意を押し殺した、険悪極きわまりない声が響く。

The sunroom was often used to dine in when the weather was nice, since it overlooked the courtyard.サンルームは中庭を一望できるため、天気の良い日など食堂として使われる。
It was a room decorated with high-quality furniture and upholstery befitting an historic western style mansion.歴史のある洋館に相応しい、家具も内装も一級品で纏められた空間である。

The fusion of Chinese Chippendale aesthetics and traditional English Georgian elegance caused even Aoko, a commoner, to think twice about doing anything "unaristocratic" on the grounds.中国風の様式美を混ぜ合わせたチッペンデール式と、スマートながら英国の歴史を受け継ぐジョージアン式との融合は、庶民である青子ですら“ここでの非貴族的行為は自粛しよう”と誓わせる程だ。
Truthfully, she was sickened by the flagrant waste of money, but none of it was paid for out of her pocket, so she could have cared less what the purchaser spent their money on.正直なところ無む駄だ遣づかい以外の何物でもないと呆れもしているが、自分の財布が痛んだ訳でもないのでいいぞもっとやれ、という心境でもある。

Three unbelievably out-of-place offerings sat atop the lavish sunroom's table, as if enshrined.そんな高級感あふれるサンルームのテーブルに、目を疑う異物が三つ、鎮座していた。
In stark contrast to the room, they appeared like meals prepared by aliens.この部屋で見ると、得体の知れない宇宙食に見えなくもない。

"Soujyuro. Is this your idea of a practical joke?"「草十郎。これ、なんか新しい冗談？」
Aoko's trembling fists clenched and unclenched, as she questioned the one responsible for today's menu.ふるふると片手かたて拳こぶしを震わせながら、青子は今日の食事当番に問いかける。
The clock struck nine in the evening.時刻は午後九時。
The chef in charge nodded dutifully, eager to explain.夕食を用意したシェフはうん、と素直に頷いた。

Kinomi said it looks and tastes fake, but honestly I think it's better than the real thing.パチモンくさいが中身はほんとにパチモンだ、と木乃美が言ってた。でも俺は本物よりいいと思う。
Besides, they're only forty yen each after the company discount.そんなコトより評価すべきは、社内販売なんで一個四十円をきる低価格だ。
A steal, right? Even with the egg on top it's still only sixty yen or so."すごいぞ、卵をつけても六十円とか」
The lackluster chef seemed pleased with himself as he boasted.驚きだ、と感心する手抜きシェフ。
Aoko wanted to grumble that the real steal was her appetite.そりゃ誰だって驚くわ、とひとり吐き捨てる青子だった。

"Well, isn't that nice for you.「そう、良かったわね。
Now, where's tonight's dinner?"ところで今日の夕飯はどこにあるの？」
The chef thought for a second or two, then clapped his hands together in revelation.シェフは二秒ほど考えこんで、ぽん、と両手を合わせた。
"Aozaki, you know if you eat too much you'll get fat."「蒼崎、そんなに食べると太るよ」

This is dinner?!"これが夕飯だって言い張る気なのねアンタはーっ！」
"No complaints, I'm not making anything else."「言い張るも何も、これ以外用意していない」

The two stood there, glaring at each other.ふたりはそこで睨み合う。
Aoko gave off an air that said she would rather die than eat his "food,"青子はこんなもの食べるものかと徹底抗戦の意を示し、
while Soujyuro was convinced she would capitulate eventually.草十郎は食べてもらえる事を大前提と信じており、
So confident, he even considered chiding her about being so picky.あまつさえ、好き嫌いはいけないぞ、なんて教育理念まで持ち始めていた。
As usual, the two could not see eye to eye.相変わらず両者の思考は噛み合わない。

"No way. There's no way I'm eating... whatever this is."「イヤ。私は食べないからね、こんなの」
"Don't be such a spoiled princess. Besides, tonight's dinner only cost two hundred yen for the three of us."「お姫さまみたいなこと言うんじゃない。大体、今日の夕食代はこれで三名さま二百円未満なんだぞ」
Soujyuro puffed his chest out at his penny-pinching prowess.けいざい的だ、と胸を張る草十郎。

Alice alternated her gaze between the two quarreling roommates and the strange food before her, which she had also never seen before. She remained a mere bystander in all this.有珠はふたりの言い合いと、目前に置かれた未知の食器……実物を見るのは初めてらしい……を交互に眺めていた。もはや完全に傍観者である。

"U-Unbelievable... a sixty-yen meal for one person? What year is it?!「し、信じられない……ひとり六十円の食事って、アンタ一体いつの生まれよ!?
These days, even new beef bowl restaurants cost more than that in ingredients, you dip!"このご時世、新しくできた牛丼屋ですら贅沢に原価あげてるわよ、ばか！」
"...Aozaki. If we ate like you wanted with only thirty-thousand yen for food each month, I'm pretty sure we would all starve to death before you two could kill me."「…………蒼崎。一ヶ月の食費が三万円だけで、あんな好き勝手な食生活をしていたら、俺が君たちに殺される前に全員が飢え死ぬと思うんだ」

"I mean, sure, the meat Alice cooked yesterday was really something.「たしかに昨日の有珠の肉料理は素晴らしかった。
I was impressed at difference in quality at seven hundred yen per ounce.グラム七百円から肉は種類が変わるんだって感動した。
Even the 100% juice from the co-op made me rethink the idea of fresh food.生協の果汁百パーセントジュースだって、ちょっと本気で馬鹿にできるもんじゃないと反省したよ。
But, if we keep eating like we have the last three days, we'll go broke."けど、あれが三日続いたらこの家はどうなってしまうんだい？」

Soujyuro was making perfect sense, for once.珍しく常識的な事を口にする草十郎。
Fortunately, neither Aoko nor Soujyuro noticed the silent stare of disapproval coming from Alice.ひっそりと抗議の眼差しを向ける有珠だが、幸い、青子も草十郎も気付かなかった。

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.「その時はその時よ。
And I should note, a meal like yesterday's was a rarity. But maybe I should thank you, since your meals have inspired Alice to put some effort into hers for a change!"それにね、昨日みたいなのは滅多にないの。有珠はアンタの料理に触発されて柄にもなく頑張ったみたいだけど！」
With Aoko's words, Alice closed her eyes.青子の言葉に、有珠は静かに瞳を閉じる。
...She might have been trying to quell her anger.……もしかすると、ああして怒りを抑えているのかもしれない。

"You astonish me, you know. How did you even get by before me?"「……信じられない。じゃあ、今までどんな生活してたんだ、蒼崎たちは」
"We made it work, thank you very much. Besides, living life one step from starvation keeps you on your toes."「その時は、それぞれでなんとかやってたわ。飢え死に一歩手前ぐらい、いい精神修行じゃない」

Her brazen response left him speechless.あまりの潔さに絶句する。

Though a story for another time, Soujyuro remembered a warning from a certain vice-president who was complaining about a certain president incessantly bugging him to take her to lunch at the end of the month.……また、これは後の話ではあるが、月の終わりになると頻繁に某会長が昼食をおごらせにやってくる、と某副会長は告発するのだった。
But that was neither here nor there.それはともかくとして。

"That was then, and this is now!「そんな昔のコトより今のコト！
Where are those cooking skills you displayed before, Soujyuro?! That's the only reason I trusted you with today's meal!"前に見せたあの腕はどこにいったのよ草十郎!?　あれを見こんで今日の夕飯を任せたっていうのに！」
Out of everything, that seemed to be what ate at Aoko the most.……なんだかんだと、青子はそれが一番悔しいらしい。
The stir-fried yaki-udon he had prepared previously had been very well received. It had even melted away Aoko's morning grumpiness with just one bite.あの時の焼きうどんはいたく好評で、起きたばかりの青子の不機嫌っぷりは一口で解消してしまったほどだ。

However, Soujyuro had not seen fit to tell them that that it was one of the only dishes in his limited repertoire.しかし草十郎は、あれが数少ないレパートリーの一つだという事を語っていない。
For a bachelor, the ability to cook is as close to a superpower as one could get.男料理とは、基本的に独身ひとりに唯一ひとつの異能力レシピなのだ。
Fifteen years into the future, it would likely become a highly desirable trait.あと十五年ぐらいしたら流行りそうな特殊能力みたいなもんである。

Regardless, that misunderstanding had led Aoko and Alice to overestimate Soujyuro's culinary talents.以上の誤解から、有珠と青子は草十郎の料理技術を過大評価していたりする。
Her ire finally made sense to Soujyuro.そこに原因があったのか、と納得する草十郎。

"...All right. Fine. We can order in. There's nothing here to cook anyway.「……分かった、自腹を切るから出前をとろう。作るにしても材料がないからな。
But only if you clear up."そのかわり、それは回収する」
Aoko basked in her victory.うむ、と自らの勝利を喜ぶ青子。

It was then, after seeing Soujyuro's face as he went to fetch the delivery menu, Aoko realized her misreading of him.が。出前の献立を取りに行く草十郎の顔を見て、青子は自分の勘違いに気付いてしまった。
What annoyed Aoko most was the fact that such little effort was put into dinner.青子がカチンときたのは、夕食に手を抜くとは何事か、という点が大きい。
But to Soujyuro, this dinner had not been about cutting corners, but rather about a meal he had legitimately wanted to try.けれど草十郎にとって、この夕食は手抜きでもなんでもなく、本気で食べてみたかったのだろう。

Aoko ruminated on how it could probably pass as food for someone raised in the mountains.山育ちはこういう物でも喜ぶのか、と青子はつくづく感心する。
And then...……と。

"...? Alice, what are you doing?"「……？　有珠、何してるの？」
Aoko noticed Alice standing near the table, holding one of the bowls tightly.青子はようやく、有珠がテーブルに近寄り、しっかりとどんぶりを持っている事に気がついた。

"Would you put that down already?「もうそれはいいんだってば。
I need to give those back to Soujyuro so we can eat a proper meal."草十郎に返して、きちんとした出前にしましょ」

Despite Aoko's words, Alice stood her ground, firmly clutching the bowl.青子に言われても、有珠はどんぶりから手を離さない。
In fact, she seemed to be embracing it.むしろ抱くように持ちあげ、
"This one is mine."「これ、わたしのだから」
Alice's faint voice drifted across the sunroom.静かな有珠の声が、閑散としたサンルームに響きわたる。

And just like that, the night's menu had been decided by majority rule.どうやら多数決によって、今夜の献立は決定したらしい。
Aoko's shoulders sank in disappointment at her lot that evening.まさかそんな、と青子は力なく肩を落とす。
Come to think of it, Alice was always peculiar about things she deemed were "hers."そういえば、有珠の『自分の物』に対する執着心は異常なものがあったなぁ、と思い返しながら。

Scene 1

It was morning, and there were ten days left in December.十二月も残すところ十日をきった朝。
While the rest of the city was preparing for Christmas festivities, Soujyuro headed to his part-time job.もうじきクリスマスと浮かれる町並みに逆行するように、草十郎はアルバイトに向かっていた。
Though it looked like it could snow at any minute, the tree-lined streets were bustling with people.今にも雪が降ってきそうな空の下、並木道は鮮やかに賑わっている。
These days were particularly merry.ここ数日は特に華やかだ。
Students on winter break spent their days hanging out with friends while they counted down the days until seasonal holidays.冬休みの学生たちは日々親しい友人と顔を合わせ、間近に迫ったイベントを指折り数えて待っている。

A flashy banner for Christmas cakes.魔よけのお札のように乱立する特製ケーキの見出し。
Huge advertisements adorning the building fronts.ビルの壁一面に貼られた巨大広告。
The station plaza bustling with pop-up stalls.駅前広場に集まった数々の露店。
From among the crowd in this heaving district Soujyuro stepped into a phone booth.そういった都会の町の賑わいを横目に、草十郎は電話ボックスに入る。
Safe from the winter wind, the inside seemed warm by comparison.中も冷えきっていたが、冬の風が入らないだけ暖かい。
The thought that it would actually be nice to have one in the mountains雪山にこういうのを置いたら便利なんじゃないか、などと思いつつ、
crossed his mind as he inserted a coin into the phone.草十郎は電話に十円玉を投入する。

He dialed a number from memory, his hand moving on its own.それなりに慣れた手つきで、暗記したナンバーをプッシュする。
After about five seconds, the phone began to ring.コールが鳴るまで約五秒。
Another five seconds, another ring...コールが鳴ってから、またも五秒。
Ten seconds had passed.十秒間の待ち時間。
He gazed through the window at the various signs on the surrounding buildings, and marveled at the sheer number of people out and about so early.電話ボックスからビルの壁に飾られた広告を見上げて、今さらながら人々の多種多様さに感心したりする。

The number he dialed was that of Tobimaru Tsukiji.電話番号は槻司鳶丸のものである。
The Tsukiji name was well known in Misaki as a distinguished landowning family going back generations.槻司家は三咲市に深く関わりのある家―――古くからの地主、名家であるらしい。
Incidentally, their residence was located in the neighboring town of Yashirogi.その豪邸は隣町である社木やしろぎにある。
The ringtone was finally replaced by the kind voice of an elderly woman.呼び出し音に取ってかわったのは、感じの良い初老の婦人の声だった。
After her polite greeting, she handed over the phone to Soujyuro's target.婦人は丁寧な挨拶の後、目的の人物に繋げてくれた。

"Morning, Tobimaru."「おはよう、鳶丸」
"'Ey. Mornin'."『……あい、おはよう』
He was still half-asleep, or so it sounded to Soujyuro.寝惚けているのか、そんな返答が受話器ごしに返される。
"I need to ask you something. Do you have a second?"「ひとつ相談があるんだけど、いいか？」
"Mm. Speak."『うむ、よきにはからえ』

His response did not exactly inspire confidence in Soujyuro, but he cut right to the chase.……大丈夫かなこの男、と不安に思いつつ、草十郎はまっすぐ本題を切りだした。
"..."『………………』
The vice-president's pause was a long one.しばらく無音。
He was hard to read from this end of the receiver.受話器の向こうの副会長が、どんな呆れ顔をしているかは分からない。

"...This is what you wake me up for?『……あのな、んな単純なコトで俺を起こすな。
Listen here, Soujyuro. If she's mad at you, take her out somewhere. Try to butter her up, show her a good time. If that doesn't do the trick, then cut her loose. What do you want me to say?"いいか草十郎。仲が悪けりゃ遊びに行け。機嫌をとりたきゃいいとこ見せろ。んで、それが合わなきゃ早めに手を切れ。俺ができるアドバイスはそんなもんだ』

And with a "peace," Tobimaru hung up.以上、と鳶丸は電話を切った。
It may have been ten in the morning to Soujyuro, but after dealing with what seemed like a six o'clock Tobimaru, all he could do was accept his advice.もう朝の十時だというのに、まるで朝の六時のような鳶丸の対応に、うむ、と草十郎は真剣に頷いた。
He could say all he liked about the guy's tone, but deep down he knew that his advice was sound.適当にあしらわれた気はするが、たしかにそれは一番現実的な気がする、と感心しながら。

Scene 2

After the phone ordeal, Soujyuro finished up his shopping and returned to the mansion just before noon.電話ボックスの一件から買い物を済ませ、正午前。
He was greeted by the sight of Aoko and Alice sitting in silent gloom.草十郎が洋館に戻ると、青子と有珠は暗い面持ちで黙りこんでいた。

Though unsure of the circumstances, from the outside looking in it seemed like the aftermath of an argument.事情を知らない第三者が見れば喧嘩の後にしか見えない。
It was similar to the calm after a violent blizzard accompanied by biting winds and stinging hail.それは吹雪ふぶくような、チクチク痛いやらヒリヒリ寒いやらな、沈黙による暴力である。
Or a similar atmosphere to the inside of an industrial freezer.居間は巨大な冷蔵庫と化している。
It would not have been surprising to look up and see icicles hanging from the ceiling.ちょっと天井を見上げれば、氷柱つららが垂れていても不思議ではないぐらいだ。

(They're at it again.)“やっぱり、今日もか”
He felt like a zookeeper pained to see the raccoon and penguin at each other's throats.アライグマとペンギンの仲違いに心痛める飼育員……
He had seen this at his job at the zoo where he was a cleaner.つい先日、日雇いで動物園の清掃をしてきた草十郎である……
Soujyuro found himself staring at them with the familiar forlorn look of the zookeeper.のような顔つきで、草十郎は青子たちを流し見る。

Needless to say, the silence meant they were not fighting at this moment.言うまでもなく、ふたりは喧嘩などしていない。
Dinner served as a respite from the infighting.食事以外では終始この調子なだけだ。
Soujyuro was oblivious to the circumstances surrounding the quarrel, but their day-in day-out battles against the mysterious mage was clearly taking a toll.草十郎じぶんの知らないところでの問題――他所からやってきた魔術師との戦いは、日に日に厳しいものになっているらしい。

(Not that Alice looks anything but grumpy.)“もっとも、有珠はいつも通りだけど”
Facing a quiet and contemplative Aoko, Alice was reading an old book, now sat on her lap, as she was accustomed to.瞑想っぽく口を閉ざしている青子に対して、有珠は古ぼけた本を両膝に置いて読む、いつものスタンスである。
The book seemed somehow heavier than the other ones.違うところといえば、その本が今までの物より遥かに重そうな物であるコトぐらい。

"I'm home. Looks like I made it in time for truce."「ただいま。煮詰まってるな、ここんところ」
He asked them as he took off his coat.コートを脱ぎつつ青子たちに声をかける。
"If only. A truce would mean we were getting somewhere.「煮詰まるぐらい事態が進んでるなら、まだ面白みもあるんでしょうけどね。
No. You're way off, Soujyuro."今の誤用よ、草十郎」

"?"「？」
Without quite knowing what Aoko was getting at, Soujyuro quizzically tilted his head.青子の言わんとするところが分からず、草十郎は首をかしげる。
He told himself not to think too hard into it, but he could not entirely help it.考えすぎはよくないぞ、とリラックスさせるつもりが、逆に注意されてしまった。

"Besides, a truce would mean an agreement has been reached.「煮詰まってるってコトはもうじき完成ってコトでしょ。
This is more of a... temporary ceasefire."進展がないって意味合いなら、行き詰まってると言うべきね」
Seemingly too preoccupied to scold Soujyuro, Aoko waved her hand as though shooing off an insect.草十郎を叱る余裕もないのか、青子は邪険に手を振って“余所にいってて”とジェスチャーする。
But Soujyuro being Soujyuro...無論、

"Okay, let me rephrase that.「じゃあ言い直して。
Sooo, any progress then?"やあ、あれから進展はあったかい？」
Soujyuro was not willing to give up and held his ground.それぐらいでめげる草十郎ではないのだった。

"That's none of your business.「草十郎には関係ないわ。
What did l tell you? Mage affairs are not for your ears."魔術こっちの事情に関しては不可侵だって、言わなかった？」
Her response was calm, but sharp.静かではあるがトゲのある返答。
Surliness was her weapon of choice, and today she seemed determined to swing it at will.ご機嫌斜めなのはいつものコトだが、今日は六割増しのようだ。

"Yes, I remember. ...Did you two eat yet?"「もちろん聞いてる。ところで、お昼はまだだろう？」
Soujyuro chose to brush off Aoko's attitude.そんな青子の不機嫌さも気にせず、草十郎は食い下がった。
If Aoko's weapon was surliness, Soujyuro's was blitheness.青子が六割増しなら、彼の暢気のんきさは二倍に増強というところ。
And he wielded just enough to make Aoko flinch.その強引さに、さすがの青子もわずかに怯む。

"What's with you today? You're more... upbeat than usual."「どうしたの、今日は。なにかいい事でもあったわけ？」
Soujyuro shrugged his shoulders.別に、と草十郎は首をふる。
"I'm not sure, I just have a good feeling about today. By the way, I have a proposal for you."「まだなんだ。じゃあちょっと、提案がある」
He said as he dug around in the pocket of his now hung-up coat.言って、ハンガーにかけたコートのポケットをあさる。
Aoko gave a puzzled stare, while Alice's ears perked up at how positive he sounded.今日にかぎって積極的な草十郎の様子を、青子は訝しげに見据え、有珠は本を読みながら聞き耳をたてている。

"I got paid today.「実は今日、給料日だったんだ。
Which means I have money. Which means we should go out and do something."お金も入った事だし、外に遊びにいこう」
He spoke with a warm smile as he removed his wallet from his coat pocket.コートから財布を取り出し、心温まる笑顔で言う。
The other two did not know what to make of it.一方、ふたりは複雑な顔である。

"Soujyuro...?"「……草十郎」
She wanted to take exception to his bright mood, but found herself wrestling with the idea of reacting positively to it.何か文句を言ってやりたかったけど、それと同じぐらい青子は草十郎に同情した。
After all, he was making a gesture of good faith to try and make things better with what little funds he had.彼はいまだ不仲な有珠と融和するため、なけなしの給料をはたいて行動に出たのだろう。

The thought itself was not a bad one.考え自体は悪くない。
And she wanted to accept his earnest goodwill, but there was always the chance that Alice would keep quiet until the slightest thing annoyed her, at which point she would dash all their plans.そんな事じゃ有珠の“とりあえず今は黙っていてあげるけど、何か目障りな事をしたら消す”感は消えないと分かっていても、その健気な努力に応援ぐらいはしてあげたい。
However, she was not in the mood to walk around town with either of the two, nor was the timing ideal.けれど、今は三人で街を歩いている気分じゃないし、状況でもないのだ。

"Sorry, but I'm kinda busy. I'll take you up on it some other time though. Just remind me."「悪いけど、いま忙しいの。暇になったら思い出してあげるから、しばらく我慢して」
Alice seemed to give the same response, though wordlessly.何も言わないが有珠も同意見らしい。
Soujyuro was not about to be held back by the sullen mood.そんな重苦しい空気にもめげず、

"Busy doing what, sitting here in silence?「忙しいって、ここで黙りあってるだけじゃないか。
Wasn't it you, Aozaki, that said a change of pace was important when staying up all night? Sometimes you need to take one step back to take two steps forward."徹夜漬けの時、気分転換は必要だって言ったのは蒼崎だろ。行き詰まったら回れ右して戻らないと、どこにも行けない」

Soujyuro spoke with unusual confidence, as he drew two tickets from his wallet and slapped them on the table.いつになく強気に言って、草十郎は財布から二枚のチケットを取り出し、とん、とテーブルに置いた。
At first glance they looked like advance tickets to a movie...but not quite. They were tickets to a famous aquarium.それは映画の前売券……なんてありきたりなものではなく、有名な水族館のチケットだった。

To get there, they would take the rapid train and subway to a city several times more modern than Misaki.行き先は、快速と地下鉄を乗り継いだ先にある、三咲市より何倍も近代化の進んだ街。
A city that housed the biggest shopping mall in the prefecture, set to open next year, as well as a multi-purpose auditorium big enough to stage international conferences and famous plays.県内最大をうたうショッピングモールだけでなく、来年開場予定の、国際的な規模の演劇、講演を可能とする多目的ホールまで造られているという。

"Oh, and eat some curry at Messiaen, on me."「それと、夜はメシアンでカレーでも食べてくれ」
Saying that, he slapped two bills on the table, as if he had struck it rich.さらに、見ようによっては黄金にも見えるお札を二枚ほどぽん、とテーブルにそえる。

Soujyuro was almost too quick with his response, helping Aoko to see things for what they really were.さらっと答える草十郎に、そういうコト、と察する青子。

Rather than for Soujyuro's benefit, his gesture was instead an attempt to ease the tension that had built up between Aoko and Alice.草十郎は自分の為でなく、ここのところギスギスしている青子と有珠の仲をほぐそうとしているのだ。
Though if asked, both girls would tell you it was an unnecessary gesture.そんなのは彼の勝手な勘違いで、言ってしまえば迷惑なお節介に分類される。

For him to pay this much attention to the household, if anything, gave Aoko reason to reflect on her own immaturity.そんな風に気を配ってくれた事と、なにより、そこまで気を遣わせてしまった自分の未熟さに反省する。

Aoko glanced over to the still-seated Alice.青子は対面に座る有珠を覗き見た。
At the same time, Alice peeked up at Aoko from behind her book.すると、ちょうど有珠も青子に視線を投げかけているところだった。
They kept still, staring at each other.ふたりはしばし無言で見つめ合う。

I'm almost done with my book."いまやれる事は全部やってあるし」
"Okay. It would be a waste not to."「そうね。そういう事なら、せっかくだし」
Alice stood up from the sofa, resigned to her decision.観念したように言って、青子はソファーから立ち上がる。
Soujyuro watched on, a satisfied smile upon his face.そんなふたりを、草十郎は満足げに眺めていた。

Scene 3

Twenty minutes later.それから二十分ほど後。
As Aoko and Alice were done getting ready, Aoko called out to Soujyuro in the drawing room.青子と有珠は外出の支度を済ませ、居間にいる草十郎に声をかけた。

"All right, we're leaving now. ...Soujyuro?"「それじゃ出かけてくるからアンタもバイト―――草十郎？」
Soujyuro was crouched in front of the television, unaware that the two had entered the room.立ち寄ったふたりに気付かず、草十郎はなにやらテレビの前にしゃがみこんでいる。
"Don't tell me the VCR is on the fritz again."「もしかして、ビデオいじってるの？」

"Oh, hey. Good timing. How do I-"「ああ、ちょうど良かった。蒼崎、これ―――」
As he turned to face them, he froze.作業を中断し、青子たちに振り向く草十郎。

And facing them only exacerbated the problem.振り向いて、驚きのあまり言葉を失った。

"You okay? Listen, we're taking you up on your offer and going out. ...Did you drop something behind the TV unit again?"「？　私たち、お言葉に甘えて出かけてくるけど……どうしたのよ、一体。棚たなの後ろに落とし物でもしたの？」
Soujyuro appeared to have gone stiff. Aoko stared at him curiously.固まっている草十郎を青子は不思議そうに見る。
Though Alice silently nodded along with his bizarre reaction,その挙動不審さに有珠もうんうん、と無言で同意した。
she kept her thoughts to herself.……実際、頷いてはいなかったが。

Still gawking, his voice stuck in his throat.すごく驚いたんだ、と続くところを、草十郎は喉を絞めて押し伏せた。
He was blissfully unaware that the shock he was experiencing was the direct result of his emotional state.その驚きが感動に由来するものである事を、彼はまだ知り得なかったからである。

Alice looked on in silence.有珠は無言で観察している。
He was not confused, or in a daydream. That much he could tell. But this frozen look was by all accounts a first for Soujyuro.あわてるのでもなく、ぼんやりするのでもなく、こんな風に固まる草十郎を見るのは初めてだったからだ。

Though she should have been used to it by now, she caught herself wondering if Soujyuro was being stupid deliberately.慣れたとはいえ、時々こいつわざとやってるんじゃないのか、と疑うほどのボケっぷりだった。

Whether or not she knew this was rude, Soujyuro glanced at her with disdain.さすがにこれは嫌味だと分かったのか、草十郎は批難の目を青子に向けた。

On the TV, a crocodile's yawning mouth appeared.テレビでは問題のワニがむはぁー、とあくびをしているところだった。

Soujyuro turned toward the TV in a huff.ぷいっと顔をテレビに逸らす草十郎。
Perhaps because of his rare outburst, as he turned face to face with the gaping maw of the crocodile on the TV, he fell backwards in surprise.彼にしては珍しく怒ったのだが、顔を背けた先で大口を開けるワニの映像と向き合い、びくっと後退したりする。

Aoko unpursed her lips upon seeing this, delighted.そんな光景を見て、青子は嬉しげに口元を緩めた。
It was relieving to see the boy disarmed.この少年はやっぱりこうでなくてはいけない、と安心するように。

Aoko said smiling as she walked out of the drawing room.微笑みながら言って、青子は居間から立ち去っていった。

Her grin was the cheap shot that left Soujyuro speechless.青子の笑顔に虚を突かれて、言葉につまる草十郎。
As he scratched his cheek, he was reminded of how she was not someone to be trifled with.やっぱり、あんな嘘が通じる相手ではなかったのだ、と頬をかく。

After watching the end of the drama between the other two, Alice made for the reception area as well.そんなふたりのやりとりを最後まで傍観してから、有珠もロビーに向かっていった。

It was certainly not easy making everything run smoothly around these parts.とりあえず、やりたいコトはきちんと機能したのだし。

Scene 3-II

From there, they rode another three stops by express train.そこから更に快速で三駅分。
After about an hour, Aoko and Alice arrived at Arisaka Station.一時間ほどかけて、青子と有珠は有坂ありさか駅に到着した。

While Misaki City was a mixture of old and new architecture, Arisaka was a brand-new town built in accordance with recent government ordinance.有坂は政令指定によって一から開発された都市だ。
It was as though an entire town full of tall buildings sprouted up in the middle of nowhere.三咲町は古きを残し、新しきを築く方針で生まれ変わった町だが、有坂は何もなかった土地に高層建築ビルディングを築き上げた街である。

Even the bustling plaza in Misaki was quiet compared to Arisaka in the evening.午後を過ぎた有坂の街の賑わいは、三咲町とは比べものにならない。

For that reason, beyond its local residents, Arisaka's station was crowded with people from far and wide.その結果、有坂駅前は地元の人々より、遠方からの来訪者が集まる歓楽地になっていた。

The aquarium they were looking for was on the top floor of a massive building.お目当ての水族館は、高層ビルの最上階に造られていた。
Maybe it was because it was no longer a new attraction,もう目新しさはないのか、
or perhaps it was because the first-floor cinema drew the crowds...階下の映画館に客足をとられているのか。
But with only a few people scattered around the entrance, the atmosphere inside was very calm.エントランスの人影はまばらで、館内の空気は落ち着いている。

There was a certain joy in seeing Alice's wonderment.有珠の驚きはそれぐらい微笑ましいものだったのだ。

According to the guide on the wall, the entrance to the aquarium was nearly as big as the Kuonji mansion's foyer.水族館のエントランスは久遠寺邸のホールほどの大きさで、壁には館内の見取り図が展示されている。

The outdoor penguin show was apparently suspended due to the star penguin "Flippy" undergoing treatment for an injury.野外のペンギンショウは休演中だった。ペンギンのペン太くんが怪我につき治療中らしい。
An unfortunate state of affairs, but one that did not stop Alice from continuing to read over the guide. Apparently she was quite familiar with penguin shows.少し残念だが、有珠は気にとめず館内案内を目で追う。彼女にとってペンギンはそう珍しいものではないらしい。

Said like someone who could not believe what they saw.“そんな、嘘よ”……と。
Alice quietly whimpered, as if holding back a scream.有珠は悲鳴を飲みこむように喉を鳴らすのだった。

Aoko said, still looking at the floor plan.館内案内を見る青子。
It was rare to see Alice getting this emotional outside of the mansion.屋敷内ではたまに見られるが、外で有珠が取り乱すのはまずあり得ない。
For some reason she was trembling.一体なにが有珠を戦おののかせたのか。
Nothing seemed terribly off about the aquarium's offerings.案内にはこれといって珍しい部分はないが……

Why is there no giant tortoise exhibit?"どうしてゾウガメの展示スペースがないの？」

It was a bitter pill for Alice to swallow.なんだかぜんぜん納得できない。
The idea that they did not have a giant tortoise, despite having a dolphin, had Alice's eyes hot with indignation.ゾウガメが不在ならイルカだって不在であるべきだ、と妙な公正さからメラメラ瞳を燃やす有珠だった。

From the entrance gate, the corridor stretched into a dark hallway completely illuminated in blue.青一色で染められたエントランスとは対照的に、ゲートから延びる通路は暗く細長い。

An hour into the wayfaring sea voyage...……徒歩による航海は一時間に及んだ。
Losing themselves in the maze-like corridors of seemingly endless exhibits, they somehow found themselves on the next floor.展示物の多さもさることながら、入り組んだ通路は迷路のようで、気付かないうちに一フロア上の階層にあがっていたりもした。
Aoko had heard that the aquarium was situated on the top floor, and was shocked to find out there was yet another above it.最上階と聞いていた事もあり、青子も二層構造と気付いた時は感心したものだ。

Turning this way and that, she found Alice had disappeared.ふと振り返ると有珠の姿がない。
She had just been there, however, and Aoko took to looking for her.さっきまで一緒にいたのに、と同居人の姿を探す。
She soon found her nearby.探し人はすぐに見つかった。
Her white overcoat shone brightly in front of the dimly lit exhibit.闇に映える白い外套コートが、ライトアップされた水槽の前に佇んでいる。

She was staring motionless into the water tank.少女はじっと青い水槽を見つめていた。
She almost looked to be staring through it, distracted by something.散漫と、ありきたりな風景を見つめるように。

She spoke, hoping to snap her out of it.微妙な様子の変化を感じて声をかける。
Alice's typically cold aura seemed to have all but left her.有珠の体にある、いつもの張りつめた空気がなくなっている気がしたからだ。

"Is it a rare fish? ...This looks like the tank they use for all the fish that don't fit anywhere else."「珍しい魚でもいた？　それ、余り物を端においやりましたって感じの水槽だけど」
Alice gave a noncommittal response.有珠はそうね、とだけ返答した。
Just ahead of her gaze was a single shadow.少女の視線の先にあるのはひとつの影。

"Wow, an ocean sunfish."「ワォ、マンボウ」
Alice remained motionless, unresponsive to Aoko's sarcasm.芝居がかった青子の声に、有珠は無言でうなずく。
She stood in silence, watching the poor little fish, drifting listlessly in the tank where they put the fish that did not fit anywhere else, here at the end of the hall.この、端においやられた水槽のさらに端っこで、彼は静かに漂っていた。

To put it lightly, sunfish were not especially pleasant to look at.一般的に言って、マンボウはカタチのいい魚ではない。
When looking at one, it begged the question of what direction evolution wanted to take with it.海を泳ぐ生物として、なぜこんな進化を？　と聞きたくなる形状だ。
It looked like it swam using rudder-like fins on its top and bottom, but lacked the grace of other fish.平べったい魚身の上下にある舵びれで泳ぐらしいが、他の魚のようなスピードは期待できまい。
To Aoko, its eyes, body, and strange movements made it an awkward creature.青子からすれば、体も目も、その在り方ものっぺりとした不思議生物である。

Alice, unmoved, fixated on the sunfish.有珠はこのように、マンボウに夢中である。

It clumsily drifted around its tank, occasionally bumping into the glass as it turned.ふらふらと漂う魚界の金平糖こんぺいとうを見つめ、彼がうまく転回ターンできずコツコツと水槽にぶつかる度に、
"Aoko, this little one can't swim well."「青子。この子、泳ぐのが下手だわ」
Alice extended her finger toward the glass, then retracted it feeling childish.水槽に触れようと指を伸ばし、大人げないと引っ込めていた。

"Well, whatever. I suppose sunfish have their own charm."「……ま、いっか。愛嬌あいきょうだけはあるしね、マンボウ」
It did not seem like Alice was going to budge.こうなっては有珠はテコでも動かない。
Resigning herself, Aoko stayed with Alice while she stared at the cushion-shaped fish.仕方ないと観念して、青子は有珠に付き合い、座布団ざぶとんのような硬骨魚を眺めるのだった。

"Huh. They have eyes like puffer fish. It also says here that the females can produce more eggs than any other known vertebrate, up to three-hundred million at a time. Neat...「へー。マンボウってフグ目だったんだ。なになに、マンボウのメスは一度に三億個の卵を海中に放出する、地上でもっとも多くの卵を産む脊椎動物である……なるほどねー。
The babies become prey to other fish, so in a way giving birth to so many is a means of survival for them."他の魚たちにとっちゃ格好のエサになるから、多く産むこと、それ自体が生存のための手段になるワケか」

Though Aoko seemed taken in by the biological details of the fish, Alice couldn't have cared less.興味深く解説を読む青子だが、有珠はマンボウの生態はどうでもいいらしい。
She was lost in the ebb and flow of emotions between wonder and woe with every clumsy bump of the fish into the glass.平たい魚影がコツコツと水槽の壁に当たるたび、目を輝かせたり、落ちこんだりする。
When out of nowhere, she softly spoke...そんな中、不意に少女は呟いた。
"About before..."「さっきの話だけど」
"Before? When?"「へ？　さっきの話って、なに？」
"About him. About leaving the house in his care."「彼について。留守を任せるとか、そういうの」

It seemed like Alice had returned to her normal self.気が付けば、少女はいつもの姿に戻っていた。
That cold aura.張りつめた空気。
Wherever, inside the mansion or out, that stubborn chill that pushed people away was back.何処であろうと、あの洋館の中であろうと、頑かたくなに人を拒む冷たさに。

He is still a complete unknown. How can I trust someone I know nothing about?"依然として彼の事は分からないもの。分からない人を、どうやって信頼すればいいの？」

"Because I know you, Aoko. You always make the right decision. So... I'm trusting your judgment on the matter."「青子の事は分かるわ。貴女はいつも正しい選択をする。……だから、青子を信じる彼の人間性は、信じてもいい」

It was true. She did not know Soujyuro, nor had any intention to.草十郎の事は分からないし、理解する気もない。
But because of her trust in Aoko, she could trust in Aoko's decision to allow him to stay.けれど、有珠じぶんの協力者である青子を信じているのなら、その選択に免じて許してもいい。
It seemed Alice was challenging her own feelings.有珠は今の自分の感情を、そう落としこんだらしい。

She said she could not trust someone she did not know.分からない人は信頼できない、と少女は言う。
Or in other words, she wished to trust a person, and in order to do so she needed to know more about them.けれど逆に言えば、それは―――誰かを信じたいから、深く理解したいと望んでいるようにもとれた。

"I do trust you. I may not be fond of you, but I trust you.「……ええ。好意はともかく、信頼だけはしているわ。

Her white coat swayed to and fro.白いコートが揺れる。
Just like that, their short excursion had come to an end.……ひとときの旅は終わった。
Straight ahead was the exit back to the real world.水の国の出口はすぐそこだ。
A step away from the exhibit was a step toward becoming better roommates.少女は水槽から視線を逸らして、付き合いのいい同居人へと歩きだした。

Scene 4

The sun sets early during winter.冬の日没は早い。
Falling below the horizon by four in the afternoon.午後の斜陽が完全に失われた午後四時。
Evening seemed to arrive at the mansion earlier than in the city.洋館は町中よりいくぶん早く夕暮れを迎えようとしている。

"I see. Now I know all about crocodiles."「―――なるほど。君の生態はよく解った」
Soujyuro sat alone, sipping his warm tea in the chilly room.冷えこんできた中、お茶だけを暖だんにして草十郎はひとりうなずいた。
He relaxed on the couch staring out the window, having had his fill of crocodiles.いいかげんワニは飽きたのか、ソファーに身を預けて、ぼんやりと窓の外を眺めている。

Once he sprawled out on he sofa, his body refused to move. Maybe he'd had always wanted to try it.一度やってみたかったのか、ソファーに寝そべったまま草十郎は動かない。
After three straight hours of crocodile-watching, he wondered what it would be like to laze there for the remainder of the day, as he nervously checked over his shoulder.三時間近くワニを観察していた影響か、あんなふうに日がな一日横になって暮らすのはどんな気持ちなのか、と真剣に悩んでいるようにも見える。

Just as he was considering taking the opportunity to nap until Aoko and Alice returned, an unfamiliar sound echoed through the halls of the mansion.いい機会だし、いっそ青子たちが帰ってくるまでソファーで眠ってみようか、などと草十郎が考えた矢先、洋館には不釣り合いな怪音が響いてきた。

Undergoing a sluggish evolution of his very own, he rose from all fours to being a bipedal.四足ワニから二足ヒトに進化するように、のっそりと起き上がる。
There was a knocking sound at regular intervals.ごんごん、という音は辛抱強く定期的に続いていた。
The sound, distinctly coming from the front door, was more familiar now. He had experienced it before during his days in the apartment.アパート暮らしの時に何度か経験した、玄関からの呼び音である。

"...Hm? A newspaper salesman?"「……むう。新聞の勧誘か？」
As he made for the foyer, Soujyuro noted how impressed he was that they had hiked all the way up the hill.こんな丘の上までたいしたもんだ、と感心しながら草十郎はロビーに向かった。

The sound resounded eerily.音は妙に響き渡る。
Without a doorbell of any kind, visitors had no choice but to rap on the door using whatever they had in hand.あの玄関には呼び鈴らしきものはないし、来訪者はいかなる道具で扉を叩いているのか。
It would take an iron clenched fist to produce that kind of sound.手だとしたら、なんていうか、畏い怖ふすべき鉄拳勧誘である。

From his position in the hall, the front door looked like an ornately built fortification.館の入り口にあたる玄関は、草十郎から見れば要塞の如き堅固さ、豪華さだ。
The strong double doors looked as though they could withstand any onslaught of blows.両開きの扉は頑丈で、破城鎚はじょうづちでも持ってこないかぎり破られる事はないだろう。
They rattled in protest to the repeated knocking.そんな扉が、何度目かのノックで悲鳴を上げるように軋んでいる。

Try as this person might, it seemed no amount of enemy attack could breach the castle gate.どうも相手は、このまま出てこないのなら城門突破も辞じさないかまえらしい。
But Soujyuro, having experienced selling newspapers himself, announced himself.新聞の勧誘バイトも経験済みの草十郎である。なので、
"Just a second!"「はーい、いま開けまーす」
He knew what it was like to be in their shoes, so was unsurprised by their unwillingness to surrender.彼らは彼らなりに必死な事を知っているので、別段そこには驚かなかった。

There stood the second surprise today.それは本日二度目の、正体不明の驚きだった。
Soujyuro stood speechless and motionless.草十郎は言葉なく立ち尽くす。

The young woman hardly looked the part of a newspaper salesman.新聞の勧誘にしては珍しく、若い女性だったから……ではない。
Standing in the courtyard against a backdrop of the dusk horizon, she looked more suited to being a resident of this western style mansion, at least more so than Soujyuro.日没前の中庭を背景にした女性の姿は、自分なんかよりよほど、この洋館に相応しく思えたからだ。

She had a dainty frame but a striking presence nonetheless.細いが、しかし、凛とした女性だった。
She was a little shorter than Soujyuro, but tall for a woman.背の程は草十郎よりやや低い。女性としては長身の部類だろう。
Her light green clothing was delicate yet flashy, and clearly something out of foreign fashion.緑色の服は地味な色彩のクセに派手で、この国の文化とは系統が違っていた。

Bold, but prim and proper.清楚せいそなのに堂々としている。
Though slightly loud, her appearance spoke of strength and confidence-華やかなようで、その実、強い芯が通っている感じ。
the kind of woman not to be trifled with that Soujyuro knew all too well.そんな、本来ならあまり混ざらない要素を持つ女性を、草十郎はよく知っている。

Only, unlike the ones he knew, this woman appeared more friendly than intimidating.ただ、草十郎の知っている彼女と違い、この女性は威圧より優しさの方が際だっていた。
Perhaps it was her short hair that made her look approachable.中性的に見えるのは短髪だからだろう。
Bright and brown, it stopped just above the nape of her neck.見るも鮮やかなブラウンの髪はうなじまでしかない。
Soujyuro, yet to say a word, thought what a shame it was to be so short.呆然と、もったいないな、と思う草十郎だった。

She looked at him and offered a smile.そんな草十郎を見て、女性は小さく微笑んだ。
Despite looking older than Soujyuro, this made her appear impish and cute.ずいぶん年上のように見えるのに、そんな仕草が悪戯っぽくて可愛いことこの上ない。

Soujyuro knew himself to be made of stronger stuff than to fall for cute smiles, and found it more than a little suspicious.自分は惚れっぽい性質たちではないと信じていた草十郎だが、なんだかそれも怪しいな、とうなだれる。
At any rate, it was rude to stare for so long.ともあれ、こうして黙りこんでいては失礼だ。

"Umm... Can I help you?"「ええと、どちら様でしょうか」
He asked shyly, steeling himself.微妙にドギマギしている心臓を落ち着けて問いかける。

"Good evening. Is Aoko home?"「こんばんは。青子います？」
She smiled as she used Aoko's first name with a sense of familiarity.女性は青子という言葉に親しみをこめて、笑顔で返してきたのだった。

"Aozaki isn't home right now."「蒼崎はいないんです」
She smiled again, this time deviously upon learning of Aoko's absence.青子の留守を告げる草十郎に、女性はあら、という意外そうな顔をした。

"Then I take it Miss Kuonji is away, too?"「それじゃあ久遠寺さんも留守なんだ」
Soujyuro looked perplexed.草十郎はしばし戸惑う。
This was the first time he had heard Alice referred to by her last name only, and again, spoken with customary respect.有珠を『久遠寺』と呼ぶ人間は今までいなかった。それも親しげに、十年来の友人のようにだ。

"I see. It's nice that they can get out during the day, instead of only the dead of night.「そっかあ。夜ならともかく、日中から二人で出かけるとは感心感心。
I was under the impression living together was merely a facade, but they really do get along."カタチだけの雑居だろうと思ったけど、ちゃんと上手くいってるのね」

Soujyuro found himself nodding in response to her smile.にこりと微笑まれて、つい頷く草十郎。
Though it was clear she knew Aoko and Alice, she was giving him an uncomfortable feeling.青子たちと面識がありそうなのも驚きだが、この女性はそもそも印象がおかしい。
Likely in her mid twenties, she did not appear that much older than he was.歳の頃は二十代前半だろうけれど、そう草十郎じぶんと歳が離れている気がしない。
Behind her carefree tone and bright smile, she was clearly trying to hide something.屈託のない口調と明るい表情が、本来の美貌を曖昧あいまいにしているような。

"So they won't be home until the evening then?"「それじゃあ、帰ってくるにしても夜？」
"No. I expect them home before the last train, though."「はい。終電前には帰ってくると思いますけど」
"I see. And who might you be?"「そう。ところで君、誰？」
Soujyuro, ever-so troubled by her forwardness, wanted to ask her the same.それはこっちの台詞なんだけど、と心の中でちょっとだけ困る草十郎だった。
Alas, "Who are you?" was a question far too difficult for Soujyuro.誰？　という問いへの返答は、草十郎には難しすぎる。

"I'm sorry. I don't really know how to answer that."「すみません。誰か、と言われてもよく分からなくて。
I guess I'm just house-sitting. I'm a friend of Aozaki's, to tell the truth."とりあえず、今は留守番してますけど、実は蒼崎の友人なんです」
A response with not an ounce of truth to it.まったく頼り気のない返答。
The young woman's face lit up at what she believed was the boy's attempt to tease her.馬鹿にしているとしか思えない少年に、女性はぱあ、と顔を明るくした。

His shy answer made her giggle.さらに自信なげな答えに、女性は笑いだしてしまった。
Soujyuro could not understand what he said that was so funny, but her laugh did not offend him. Rather than seeming derogatory, it came across as warm and affable.草十郎にはどのあたりが可笑しかったのか分からなかったが、そう気分の悪い笑い声ではない。そこには卑下するものはなく、包むような温かさがあったからだ。

After finishing giggling, she looked him straight in the eye and gave him a soft look.女性はひとしきり笑った後、やけに親しげな眼差しで草十郎を見つめ直した。

She stepped past him into the mansion, and swiftly left him at the door.女性は草十郎を置き去りに、堂々と玄関を抜けていく。

"Oh wow, it's just as I remember it.「うわ、呆れた。ほんと以前のまんまじゃない。
I thought she would have repaired the damaged pieces, what with taking the trouble to bring them all the way here. It looks like even the warped columns are as warped as ever."せっかくこっちに持ってきたんだから、悪いところは修復リフォームしたものと思ったけど。なにも柱の歪みまで再現しなくてもいいのにねー」

She said, cheerfully inspecting the foyer.女性は楽しげにロビーを観察する。
Soujyuro still stood at the entrance.草十郎は玄関に置き去り状態。
The clicking of her heels on the wooden floor jumped around as she moved towards the drawing room.靴ヒールの音はロビーを横切って、居間に続く扉に向かっていく。

"Why are you standing there? The drawing room is this way, isn't it?"「どうしたの？　こっちでしょ、居間は」
She disappeared from the foyer into the drawing room, oddly familiar with the layout of the house.勝手知ったる他人ひとの家状態で、女性は迷いなく居間に続く廊下に消えていった。

"Does she know Aozaki from school? Or maybe she knows Alice?"「蒼崎か有珠、どっちかの先輩……かな？」
Soujyuro muttered to himself, walking to the drawing room.ぽつりと呟いて、草十郎も居間に向かった。

He entered to see the woman walking around the room gleefully.草十郎が居間に入ると、女性は感心しきった顔で、居間中を漫すずろ歩いていた。
Like a child seeing a park the first time in ages,公園の並木道を散策するような、

What remained on-screen was the reflection of Soujyuro and Touko Aozaki, sitting opposite each other in conversation.ブラウン管に映るのは、テーブルをはさんで談話する草十郎と、蒼崎橙子の姿だけ。

"Aoko gave it to me."「くれたのは青子ですね」
Touko simply nodded in satisfaction at Soujyuro's candid response.きっぱりと答える草十郎に、橙子はそう、と満足げに呟いた。

She coldly muttered. With this, the cordial atmosphere began to turn.呟いた声は冷たい。それこそ、ここまで打ち解けた雰囲気を一変させるような。
Soujyuro nodded, naturally oblivious to the sting in her words.そんな橙子の鋭さに気づきもしないで、草十郎は頷いた。
"She does like to own things."「なんでも所有されてるそうです」

He said casually, causing Touko to burst out in laughter.他人事のように言う草十郎に、橙子はまた笑いだした。
Touko was the quirky type of person to laugh when least appropriate.些細な事に笑いだす奇癖を、この人物は持っているらしい。
As her laugh tapered off into a giggle, she picked up her now empty teacup.ひとしきり笑い終わった後、橙子は空からになったティーカップを手に取った。

He wondered why she would need to ask his approval, but nodded anyway to confirm his consent.なんでそんな事を謝るんだろう、と思いつつ、草十郎はどうぞ、と促す。
"That's very kind of you.「それじゃあ、お言葉に甘えて。
Though, I do wish I could have enjoyed more of your hospitality."もう少しぐらいは、君の反応を見ていたかったけど」

Touko touched the temples of her glasses.橙子の指が眼鏡の蔓つるに触れる。
If you were to look close enough, you might have noticed how her slender fingers were scarred.彼女の長い指は、よく見ると傷があった。

She sat titillated at the prospect of the young boy's shock and fear at her transformation.この少年が自分の変化にどんな反応を示すのか、その怯えや豹変を楽しむように。
Such expectations, however, were often left unfulfilled when it came to Soujyuro.しかし。そんなまっとうな愉悦かんがえは、彼にはまったく適用されなかった。

by some twist of fate, it was a headache she now unknowingly shared with her sister.何の因果か、おかしな頭痛に悩まされる姉妹である。

He had finally understood the true danger of the situation.彼にもようやく、この場がどれほど危険なのか理解できたらしい。

Touko asked with a grin.楽しげに微笑む橙子。
Despite the spitting image of each other, without her glasses, Touko's smile was rather sinister.カタチは同じなのに、眼鏡がないだけで冷たい微笑に変わっている。

Touko was no longer surprised that Soujyuro would be more concerned about the safety of others over his own.この状況で自身の安全ではなく他人事ひとごとの質問をする草十郎に、しかし橙子は驚かない。
In just one short hour, she had come to understand Soujyuro Sizuki better than he knew himself.彼女は彼以上に、この一時間で静希草十郎という人間を把握していた。

His mind went numb, like he couldn't tell who he was.正体のつかめない浮遊感と、脳の痺れ。
As if he was drifting into a sinister sleep from which he'd never wake.魔物のような眠気、というのがもっとも近いイメージだった。

Soujyuro clenched his jaw, desperate to maintain consciousness.草十郎は歯を食いしばって意識を保つ。

Realizing, however, that it was no ordinary anger, Soujyuro understood how careless he had been.それが怒りだけのものではないと気付いて、草十郎はようやく、自分の軽率さを悔いた。

Aoko looked on in amazement, wondering if they would stay this way all night if left alone.放っておけば一晩中そうやっていそうなふたりを、青子は呆れて眺めている。

Pain was pain, but he knew how to take a knock.痛む事は痛むけど、体の痛みには慣れている。
More to the point, the crisp strike from Alice snapped him out of his fog, jogging his memory.それよりいま重要なのは、有珠の平手で記憶が鮮明になったという事だ。

She could not have put it into words even if she had tried.言語化できないが、それはしたくないと思ってしまった。

She smirked childishly.にやっと笑う青子。

Soujyuro did not take the bait.しかし、草十郎はまったく動じていなかった。
Aoko was frustrated at his reply.そこまで言われては青子もカチンとくる。

An icy glare replaced her smile.作り笑いを消して、真剣な眼差しで青子は問いかけた。

Not even an hour had passed since Touko left the estate, and Soujyuro was feeling the distance between him and the girls.橙子が去ってからまだ一時間も経っていないのに、草十郎には彼女の顔がひどく遠いものに感じられた。
Aoko and Alice felt much the same way about Touko Aozaki, who seemed more elusive than a phantom.青子と有珠にしてみれば、現在の蒼崎橙子の姿は幻よりさらに遠いに違いない。

"Anyway! Soujyuro, you at least understand that she's our enemy, right? If so, stop arguing with me, and let sleeping bears lie!「とにかく！　姉貴が敵だって事は草十郎にも分かったでしょう？　ならつべこべ言わず、君子危うきに近寄らずよ！
Although, after meeting you, she must have realized that you have nothing to do with us, so I doubt we need to worry about her going after you."……ま、姉貴もアンタと会って、私たちとはまったくの無関係だって分かっただろうから、そっちには手を出してこないでしょうけど」

She wondered where his serious manner and tone had gone.さっきまでの深刻な顔つきと口調はどこへいったのか。
Soujyuro's frustrating absentmindedness had returned.今ここにいやがるのは、いつものぼんやりとした草十郎だった。

Aoko's fist trembled violently, but as much as she wanted to, she knew better than to plant it into Soujyuro's carefree face.ぬぬぬ、と拳を震わす青子だが、草十郎の暢気顔のんきがおを殴りつけるワケにもいかない。
Not that he was even capable, but even if Soujyuro did try to stop Touko, it would have gone tragically for him.もし草十郎が橙子を止めていたら大惨事だったろうし、なにより草十郎に、あの姉を止められた筈もないのである。

He hoped he was imagining it, but he vaguely recalled her declaring Soujyuro Sizuki as someone's property...……気のせいだといいのだけど、彼女はしきりに静希草十郎を、誰かさんの持ち物だと決め付けていたような……。

Soujyuro's face turned grim, not unlike a detective at the scene of a crime-手強い難問に出会った刑事よろしく、顔をしかめて呟く草十郎。
a scene which left no traces of evidence or clues as to how the case could be solved.解決策がまったく見つからないあたりまで、ホントよく似ている。

Unaware of Soujyuro's turmoil, Aoko calmly sipped her tea.草十郎の気持ちも知らず、青子は気楽に答えて紅茶を飲んだ。
